General Info
Your Horse's Health:
Horses who have or are prone to laminitis are generally overweight, therefore the Nibble Net (2.7cm x 2.7cm hole size) is usually the best sized hay net if they are used to eating from slow feeders. The Nibble Net is also suitable to use for horses who suffer from choke - assuming you are using fine hay which can still be pulled through the smaller holes. This can help prevent greedy horses gorging on large mouthfuls which can cause choke.
Condition of Your Horse:
The condition of your horse is a big factor in your choice of Hay Netz. If your horse is overweight and on a restricted forage intake then the smaller sized Nibble Net with the 2.7cm x 2.7cm sized holes would suit - assuming they are used to eating from slow feeders. If your horse is of normal weight, then the Medium Muncher would be idea - this allows horses to trickle feed with more intake and reduces waste on the ground.
Type of Hay:
This is important when making your decision regarding which Hay netz to use. Fine short hay will suit a smaller hole size whereas longer more stalky hay will require a larger hole size. This is important because if the hay is too long and placed in a Nibble Net, your horse may become frustrated or in some cases, may not even try to use it as the hay won't pull through.
Teaching you horse horse how to use the slow feed Hay Netz.
Do not start with the Nibble Net as a stand alone until your horse has accepted it. In the first instance, fill the Nibble Net and have another net beside it with larger holes and/or place some hay on the ground. This will ensure your horse will be eating whilst learning! Most horses grasp the Nibble Net concept within a few hours.
Our Hay Netz
Nibble Net - Hole Size 2.7cm x 2.7cm
Medium Muncher - Hole Size 70m x 80m
Greedy Gobbler - Hole Size 4.5 x 4.5
If you are just trying to reduce waste and you horse doesn't require and restriction, the Medium Muncher is a good choice.
The Greedy Gobbler is also a good choice for the larger sized horses that don't require restricted hay but you want to ensure they have plenty of hay to nibble at the same time reducing waste. The Greedy Gobbler takes 1 bale of hay.
Soaking Hay with HayNetz
HayNetz are waterproof and wash well - but because they are made of soft weave fabric, they can harbour bacteria so we advise washing them on a regular basis with with a high pressured hosepipe or washing machine - they come back looking like brand new!
